Any Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast knows the story of their first collaborative work, Thespis, or The Gods Grown Old, which was premiered in December of 1871. Today the libretto survives, but the music is lost, except for two individual pieces that can be verified from the original score.
Bruce Montgomery composed new music for Gilbert’s libretto in the style of Sullivan for the worldwide celebration of the Thespis centenary in 1971. This is the overture to the complete opera in two acts that has been published for the first time.
