2022 Broadway Stars & SG Alumni Performers

Broadway stars celebrate BMFA’s 10th Anniversary!

As we move into summer, we are still basking in the glow of our spectacular 10th Anniversary Celebration. On April 9th, top stars from the Broadway stage joined BMFA at Philadelphia’s 2300 Arena to honor and celebrate our 2022 Springboard Grant Winners. Each year BMFA awards $2,500 grants to talented young performing artists to help them realize their dreams.

Producer Stephen DeAngelis created a mesmerizing evening of entertainment featuring Broadway stars Kissy Simmons (Nala in The Lion King); Jelani Remy (Simba in The Lion King, and as Eddie Kendrick in Ain’t Too Proud: The Life & Times of The Temptations); and Sara Jean Ford (Christine in Phantom of the Opera). They were accompanied by Music Director, Asher Denburg.

As a special treat, the pros were joined by two members of BMFA’S Springboard Grant family: soprano/actress Amber Emerson (2014 grant winner), and mezzo-soprano/actress Aryssa Leigh Burrs (2017 grant winner), both of whom are well on their way to exciting professional careers. There was also a surprise performance of “I Want to Be a Star” from Nunsense by Gabrielle Greene, (one of this year’s Springboard Grant winners), who also starred on Broadway when she was thirteen, in School of Rock.

Kicking off the evening were live performances by our 2020 Springboard Grant winners: violinist Myles Bell; composer/singer-songwriter Avery Hirsh; classical composer/pianist J.P. Redmond; and saxophonist/founder of Key of She Jazz Olivia Hughart, each of whom was awarded their 2020 Springboard Grant “virtually” during the pandemic. After more than two years of Covid isolation, it was especially meaningful to be back together in person this year, sharing the gift of music with so many talented young musicians, their proud families and friends, and our ever-generous donors and supporters.

Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to make this year’s Winners Showcase a hybrid event, allowing guests to attend in person or enjoy the festivities via livestream. Regrettably, there were some issues on the night of the event for some of those who had elected to attend virtually. Rest assured, as soon as post-production of our video is complete, all who purchased livestream tickets will receive a special link to view the evening’s festivities. Before summer’s end, a video of the event will be available on our website for everyone’s viewing pleasure. Please stay tuned.

We also made an exception to our requirement that all grant winners be able to receive their awards in person. As it happened, our first winner was with a select group of musicians in Chicago the weekend of our Winners Showcase, with an unprecedented opportunity to learn and play under the baton of Riccardo Muti with the Chicago Symphony. Gabriela sent us a short speech via video, and her mother, MariaJosé, accepted her award onstage.

Please meet our 2022 Springboard Grant Winners
